A Story I Remember*

St.Patrick's Day Injunction

St.Patrick is the patron saint of engineers.  At many universities, engineers celebrate St.Patrick's Day by playing pranks on other schools.  A common rivalry is between an engineering school and a law school.

Typically, engineering students pull pranks on law school students.
  • Putting a skunk down the ventilation shaft of the Law College
  • "Borrowing" the lighted sign from in front of the Law Administration Building, installing green engineering-color lights, and placing it on top of the Engineering Building.
Law students would, naturally, then have to retaliate in some appropriate manner.

At the University of Iowa, it was a practice for engineers to paint green shamrocks around the parking lots at the Law School.  One year, however, the law students decided enough was enough.  The best defense is a good offense:  A preemptive strike.
Practicing their studies, the enterprising law students found a friendly judge and obtained a permanent court injunction preventing "the University School of Engineering, and it students and staff, from harrassing the University Law School or students or staff."

*  I remember the stories in this section.  For most of them, however, I do not remember when or where I first heard the story.
